Xbox 360 RROD - Which Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error Fix Is The Greatest?
Well when I first started looking for a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I felt overwhelmed by the different information out there. There are a million sites, each hawking their directions (usually $24.95. You can get some for free) and next you have the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have located the miracle cure. The 3 that I am going to review are what look like typically the most popular (and often most absurd).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something similar to this: You take the hard drive off, wrap the entire unit in a towel to stop the excess heat from escaping, turn the console on for around 15 minutes to cook (some instructions suggest an hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it works. But why? I have not heard a decent explanation yet. Here is one of the answers..."the system gets so scorching that it melts the solder that was cracking to the trigger the red lights to begin with"..... Let us discuss a couple of probable hazards as pointed out in the same information "could potentially damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The system could catch on fire it gets so hot". I must say I will rate this as the 2nd most idiotic Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix from the three in consideration. Recommendation: Do not use this repair.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I do not even want to explain how to do this. Basically, a rubbermaid tub is filled up with ice water, some vinegar is put in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged in water/vinegar mixture. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard about a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as a lot of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. It really is quite irresponsible and really should be deleted. This fix is easily the most ridiculous fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Don't even consider using this repair for those who value your life.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Repair - This is the only legitimate repair I've discovered thus far. It's as permanent as it gets. Avoid the use of it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console back to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Having said that, if the seal is broken and/or it isn't under warranty this repair is the best choice. This is the fix in summary; you get into the console, remove the x-clamps, clean the old thermal paste, put brand new thermal paste on, substitute the x-clamps with screws and washers, reassemble the system, overheat, allow it to cool-down and it works on around 90% of the units. Advice: Use this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
